Unlocked 4G Phones
Unlocked phones offer the buyer a lot more choice. You’re able to switch carriers as you like, you get the phone exactly as the manufacturer intended and your new phone isn’t cluttered with carrier bloatware. If you travel a lot you’ll also benefit from not having to pay a carrier roaming fee, which can run to a few dollars a minute. Instead, you can buy a prepaid SIM for the country you’re visiting along with an international phone card and pay normal call charges for both local calls and calls back home.
Not every 4G phone offered by the main carriers is available as an unlocked device. Below are the best deals we’ve found online.
Best Selling Unlocked Devices
Samsung Galaxy S III
The Samsung Galaxy S III is the flat-out best selling unlocked smartphone right now – there are lots of reasons why but they all come down to the fact that it’s a damn fine phone.
As well as a 1.4 GHz quad-core Exynos processor, 2GB RAM and 16GB of memory, there’s the giant 4.8-inch Super AMOLED Display that comes with a thin but durable covering of Gorilla Glass 2.0, making it well-protected but responsive to the touch. Read our full S III review here.
HTC Droid Incredible Android
There’s no doubt what the main attraction of the Incredible is – the camera. The 8-megapixel shooter starts up instantly, even when activated from a protected lock screen, and shoots images without a shutter lag. You press the button, it shoots.
A combination of the wide f/2.2 aperture lens and back side illuminated (BSI) sensor means the Incredible is capable of taking sharp photos even in tough low-light scenes. There’s built-in HD video stabilization to hide shaky recording and you can perfect your footage with the on-phone video editor.
Bonus: The HTC Incredible is one of the cheapest unlocked options out there. Available in black.
Other HTC 4G Phones Worth a Look include the HTC One X – not as cheap as the Incredible but worth investigating all the same.
Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Finally, let’s not forget one of the best-loved phones of recent years. Just about everyone who has the Samsung Galaxy Nexus falls in love with the pure Android 4.0 interface, the thin but strong frame and casing and the large, bright screen.
And that’s just the beginning.
